At our meeting on 28th February guest speaker, Vic Heaney gave an entertaining and inspirational talk to Carnforth Rotary about his ‘Walk of Life’. Vic’s first wife died of pancreatic cancer and he undertook a 1900kms walk (17.5 million steps) to raise funds for pancreatic cancer research, from his home in the French Pyrenees to his birthplace in Blackpool. He walked for 70 days, supported by his wife Gay, and arrived in Blackpool on his 70th birthday.
As an added challenge, prior to the commencement of the walk, Vic discovered that he was completely losing his central vision. This made it impossible to read maps and walking on rough ground became very challenging.
President Cliff Randall presented Vic with a cheque for £50 which with £47.35 from sales of his book “Vic’s Big Walk” and some individual contributions came £97.35 for Pancreatic Cancer to help them with their vital work.
