At our meeting on 30th May, Carnforth Rotarians and guests were given an amazing insight to the National Citizen Service programme by Victoria Carter and Joel Chesters. Victoria is the organiser for the local programme which commenced with 12 candidates in the first year. Over 1,000 young people now take part in a 4 week summer programme of adventure, social activities and personal development, culminating with a group project in the final week.
One recent project was the development of a label to identify suitable products for donation to food banks at supermarkets, which has now gone national. Food banks can now have more donations of essential foods.
Joel showed us two videos, one of his time as a candidate on the programme and the other of an Easter event project at Williamson’s Park in Lancaster. He then told us about the experience and confidence he had gained over the 4 weeks and how he had then gone on to apply, and be selected, for the National Board for Youth.
