District Governor Ian McTurk presented a short resume from a newspaper article that provided information on the formation of the club which started with a membership of around 25 men. The supporting club to obtain Charter status was Morecambe and Heysham Rotary Club. President Anthony in his response spoke about the conditions in the immediate post World War 2 period and contrasted them with our present day situation.

The guest speaker was Sir John Saunders, a retired High Court Judge. Sir John was the Coroner who conducted the Inquests into the Manchester Arena bombing and was subsequently made Chairman of the Inquiry which is ongoing. Sir John’s talk was entitled “Is the Law becoming and Ass?”. He presided over the Phone Hacking Case and the MPs’ Fraudulent Expenses Cases. There was often humour in the way he spoke about aspects of some cases, but more seriously about the way media reported especially in newspaper headlines. He spoke about his personal concerns on long sentences for some offences and the limitations on rehabilitation of such prisoners.
