At our club Face to Face meeting on 3rd February our president, Anthony Chick gave a talk entitled ‘RotaKids Clubs – An Ideal way to Serve the Young People in our Community’.
Rotary has 6333 clubs for young people in 109 districts within 33 countries. Brazil has the most RotaKids clubs with 300 and in the UK there are 261 with 54 in our district 1190. In the USA the clubs are not named Rotakids they are called FrontKids.
Carnforth Club, supported by RC Lunesdale, chartered their first RotaKids club at Arkholme Primary School in 2011 with pupils from years 5 and 6.. Chartering of clubs at Slyne -with-Hest, Carnforth Christ Church and Holme Community School followed in later years. Every club elects its own Chairman, Secretary, Treasurer and Publicity officer. Rotary members visit the school to take part in the RotaKids’ meetings and act as mentors.
All of these clubs have engaged in many fund raising efforts within their local community. Of note is the Reverse Advent Calendar which is run in December to encourage the school pupils to bring in food and toiletry items for the local Foodbank. Delivering and sorting the gifts on a visit to the foodbank premises helps engage the pupils with this now essential organisation.
Litter picking is another activity which is enjoyed by the children dressed in tabards and using equipment provided by Lancaster city Council.
Every club has to take on an International project. These include Backpacks for Mary’s Meals, Shoe Box Appeal, Microfinance loan to Lend With Care.
In 2013 we supported the first District 1190 RotaKids Conference. Since then conferences have been held at University of Cumbria with up to 130 RotaKids attending from 30 clubs. The RotaKids have enjoyed meeting other club members and engaged in a number of activities.
